Short for disorder, a real mental illness. The picture many people know is someone who washes their hands again and again and cannot stop, and that picture is a fair example — but it is not the whole story. The “obsessive” part is thoughts that push in and will not leave: fear of , fear of harm, a feeling that something is not “right.” The “compulsive” part is the acts the person feels they must do to quiet those thoughts: washing, checking locks, counting, arranging. The person often knows it is too much, and still cannot just stop; that is why it is an illness, not a habit. Though actually, people now say “I’m so OCD” about liking a tidy desk. That stretch is common and : wanting things neat is not OCD.
