1. 1

Something obtrusive sticks out in a way that bothers you. A huge bright sign on a quiet street is obtrusive; a person who keeps interrupting is obtrusive. It is stronger than “noticeable.” Noticeable can be fine, even useful. Obtrusive means you wish it would stop drawing attention. Designers and use it a lot: they want a building, a colour, a camera, or a to do its job without being obtrusive. The kinder twin is unobtrusive, which is often a compliment — you hardly notice it, and that is the point. The word is a little formal, but you will see it in reviews and careful writing more than in playground talk. Though actually, people also use it about manners: an obtrusive question is not loud, it is just too nosy for the moment.
