Obsidian is a kind of rock that looks like black glass — dark, smooth, and shiny. It forms when lava cools very fast. When it breaks, the edge can be extremely sharp; people long ago used it for knives and . Today you may see it in jewellery or in a museum. It is a geology word. You will not hear it much at the dinner table unless someone is talking about volcanoes or pretty stones. Though actually, not every piece is pure black; some have a little colour or a sheen, but the famous picture in people’s heads is still that black-glass look.
