Obsequies are the ceremonies of a funeral — the service, the rites, the formal goodbye. The word is almost always plural; the old singular obsequy is rarely seen now. It is a , rather old-fashioned word. In ordinary English people say funeral or funeral service. You will meet obsequies in novels, history, and grave newspaper reports, not in a text message. It looks a lot like obsequious, but they are different words now: one is about burying the dead, the other is about the living.
