To objectify someone is to treat them as a thing instead of as a full person. Most often it means treating a person, especially a woman, as a body to look at or use. You can also objectify an idea: you speak of it as if it were a solid object you could pick up. The verb is a bit formal; the matching noun is objectification. A trap sits right next to it on the page: to object (stress on the second beat: ob-JECT) means to say you are against something. Objectify is not that verb with an extra tail — it comes from the noun object, ‘a thing’, plus -ify, ‘make into’. In ordinary talk people may just say ‘they treated her like a thing’; objectify is the word essays and news reach for when they want that idea named.
