To obfuscate is to make something unclear on purpose — to darken the meaning so that people cannot easily see what is going on. Politicians, lawyers, and companies are often accused of obfuscating: long answers, words, extra steps that hide the simple point. In computing, to obfuscate code is to scramble it so humans (and sometimes machines) can hardly read it, while it still runs — a technical use, not always an insult. The word is formal and a little sharp; in speech it often carries blame. The matching noun is obfuscation.

組成From Latin ob- “over, against” + fuscō “to darken,” from fuscus “dark.” English borrowed the verb (and an older adjective) from Late Latin obfuscātus / French obfusquer. It is a doublet of dusken “to darken.” The -ate is the verb-forming ending.
