    Oberon is the king of the fairies in Shakespeare’s play A Night’s Dream, and the husband of , the fairy queen. In the play the two have quarrelled; their fight spills into the human world and makes the lovers’ night in the wood a mess, until they make peace. English speakers meet the name almost only in that play, in talk about it, or in later stories and operas that borrow the same fairy court. It is a proper name, not a job-word: you do not call just any fairy king “an oberon.” Older English had the form Auberon.
