Oberammergau is a small town in , in the south of Germany, in the Alps. People around the world know it for one thing: a huge outdoor play about the last days of Jesus — his suffering and death — that the town itself puts on. The people of Oberammergau are the actors, not a travelling company. They promised God they would do this if the town was spared from the plague in the 1630s, and they have kept the promise. The play is put on about every ten years (the year can shift a little, as it did when illness delayed it). It lasts many hours, draws visitors from far away, and is taken very seriously by the town, not as a tourist trick. In English you meet the name mainly in travel writing, church history, and news in those special years. It is a place-name, so you do not say “an Oberammergau.”
