An obelisk is a tall stone pillar that rises to a point at the top, usually with four flat sides. Ancient Egypt made the famous ones, often cut from a single piece of stone and covered in writing. Later cities copied the shape as a monument — a marker to remember a person or an event. You may have seen pictures of a very tall one in Washington, or one standing in a square in a European city, sometimes brought from Egypt. Though actually, not every pointed monument is an obelisk in the strict sense. The true shape is a tall, four-sided shaft with a small pyramid only at the very top — not a church , and not a pyramid, which is wide at the bottom and all . The word is rather specialist; everyday English might just say that tall pointed monument. A related scholar’s mark, the obelus (the little dagger sign in a text), comes from the same Greek word for a needle or a pointed cooking spit, but that is a different thing. This word here is the stone.
組成From Greek obelískos, a small obelós. An obelós was a pointed thing — a needle, or a metal spit for cooking. The diminutive ending made it “a little pointed thing.” French and then English borrowed it for the stone pillar.
