- 1
An oasis is a small green area in a desert where there is water, so plants can grow and people and animals can rest and drink. Because a desert is so dry and difficult, an oasis feels like a small miracle in the middle of it — which is why people also use 'oasis' for anything that feels like a peaceful, pleasant break in the middle of something hard or busy, like 'this little café is an oasis of calm in a busy city.'
