In George Orwell's book 1984, O'Brien is the man Winston trusts, and that trust is the trap. Winston, the main character, works for the Party — the group that watches everyone. O'Brien seems clever, calm, even kind. Winston slowly believes O'Brien is a secret friend, someone who also hates the Party and will help him fight it. Though actually, O'Brien has been playing a part the whole time. He later takes Winston away, hurts him, and works on his mind until Winston cannot hold on to the woman he loved, or even to the simple thought that two and two are four. Readers talk about O'Brien when they mean a polite person in power who pretends to be on your side. The name itself is an ordinary Irish family name; Orwell just gave it to this character. You do not call a “an O'Brien” in the street unless you are clearly pointing back to the book.
