NYPD is the short written name of the New York City Police Department — the police force of New York City in the United States. People say the four letters: N-Y-P-D. You see it on cars, jackets, and news headlines, and you hear it a lot in American films and TV shows about crime. It is only that city’s police, not the police of the whole country, and not the police of New York State. Officers who work there are often called NYPD officers or NYPD cops.
