Nutraceuticals are foods — or pieces of foods — sold as more than ordinary eating. The promise is that this yoghurt, this juice, this powder in a tub will help the body and lower the chance of getting ill: extra vitamins put in, some of the fat taken out, bacteria added for the gut, and so on. The word itself is a blend of nutrition and pharmaceutical, and that mix is the honest picture: it sits in a grey place between a meal and a pill. In shops you meet drinks with extra protein, cereal with added fibre, and capsules that look like medicine but are still sold as food. Scientists do not all agree how much these products really do. Some are everyday food with a bigger label; some have a real, measured extra. You will hear the word in business and in health writing more than at the family table. At home people more often say health food or supplement. Though actually, a health claim on the pack is a sales sentence, not automatically a proof.
