Nursing is the job — and the trained skill — of looking after people who are ill, hurt, or old. Nurses do this work in hospitals, clinics, and care homes: they give medicine, watch the body, keep people clean and safe, and notice when something is wrong. The word names the work itself, not one person (that person is a nurse). In everyday talk it can also mean the whole profession: “She went into nursing.” It is a respectful, ordinary word. The same spelling can mean feeding a baby with milk from the breast, but that is a different use.
