Nuptials means a wedding — the ceremony and often the whole occasion. It is almost always plural in this sense, even when you are talking about one wedding: their nuptials, the nuptials will be held in June. The word feels formal, old-fashioned, or newspaper-fancy; friends saying “We’re getting married” would not normally call it their nuptials unless they were joking. You will see it in society pages, novels, and church notices. It names the event, not the married life that comes after. Latin already used the related word in the plural, which is why English still likes the -s.
