1. 1

Numinous is a literary and religious word. A place, a piece of music, or a moment is numinous if it feels holy, strange, and larger than ordinary life — as if something divine is near. It does not have to name a particular god. A quiet temple at , a huge night sky, a sudden hush in a church: those can feel numinous. The feeling is not simply “pretty” or “scary.” It is the sense that you have close to something sacred. Writers, theologians, and careful use the word. You will almost never hear it in the market or on the bus. Though actually, it looks a little like numerical, and a little like luminous, and it is related to neither in meaning. It is about presence, not about numbers or light.
