    The nucleus is the center of something, and it has two very specific scientific meanings you'll meet most often. In biology, the nucleus is the round structure inside a cell that holds the cell's DNA and controls what the cell does — almost like the cell's control room. In physics and chemistry, the nucleus is the tiny, dense center of an atom, made of and neutrons, with electrons moving around it. Outside of science class, 'nucleus' can also be used more generally for the central, most important part that everything else grows around — 'the nucleus of the team.'
