In older Latin, nūbilis meant a woman who was old enough to marry, from nūbō, “to take a husband.” English borrowed it through French. Learner dictionaries now gloss it as a young woman who is sexually attractive, and they note that people sometimes use it with a smile, as a joke. That is the messy truth: the tidy “ready for marriage” sense is still in the history, but what you meet in reviews and old-fashioned writing is often a man looking at a young woman from the outside. Many careful speakers avoid it for that reason, or they use it only when they are teasing old books and old films. Young people almost never say it in ordinary talk, and it is almost never used of men. It is not a kind classroom word.
