Nov. is the short written form of November, the eleventh month of the year. You see it in dates, calendars, diaries, tickets, and forms. It almost always has a capital N. British writing often keeps the full stop (Nov.); American writing sometimes drops it (Nov). People say the full word November when they speak; they do not normally say “Nov” out loud, except when reading a date quickly. Though actually the name November comes from Latin for “nine”, because in the old Roman year this was the ninth month. The Romans later put January and February at the front, so November is now the eleventh month, but the old name stayed.
