Nougat is a sticky, sweet made with sugar or honey and nuts, and sometimes small pieces of fruit. In Europe it often comes in bars or thick pieces; some kinds are soft and pale, some are darker and firmer. It is a food word: not formal, not slang. Though actually, the sweet a student in Taiwan is most likely picturing — peanut-and-milk 牛軋糖 — is a close cousin, not always the same as French nougat with almonds and honey. People still use the English word for both.

組成From French nougat, from Occitan nogat, from noga (“nut”), ultimately from Latin nux (“nut”) + -atus (“-ate,” forming words for something that has or is like a thing). Compare Spanish nuégado.
