A strong wind, or the storm that rides with it, coming from the northeast. On the east coast of the United States people know these storms well: wet, rough, sometimes full of snow, knocking boats and power lines about. Though actually in New England many people say nor’easter, swallowing the th — same weather, friendlier mouthful. Wind names tell you where the wind comes from, not where it is going, so a northeaster blows out of the northeast. That is the opposite logic from northbound. Taiwan’s 東北季風 is also a wind from the northeast, but that is a seasonal monsoon, not this named storm. You will meet northeaster in weather reports and sea stories more than in classroom lists.

組成From north + easter. An easter is an old name for a wind from the east, so a northeaster is a wind from the northeast.
