1. 1

Nonlinear means not following a straight line or a steady, predictable pattern. In math and science, a nonlinear equation doesn't change at a constant rate. The word is also used more loosely — a 'nonlinear story' jumps around in time instead of going in order, and people say 'learning is nonlinear' because progress comes in uneven bursts, not a steady line.
