Nonetheless means: even so; in spite of what was just said, the next thing is still true. Something pulls one way, and you still do or still believe the other thing. It is a little more formal than still or even so, and a close twin of nevertheless. You can put it at the start of a sentence or later, after a pause. The feeling is calm, not dramatic. Though actually, it does not argue against the first fact; it lets both facts stand. The rain was heavy; nonetheless, they played. Both parts are true.
