A noncount noun is a noun you do not count with numbers in the usual way. You do not say one advice, two furnitures, or three waters when you mean the idea in general. English teachers also call these uncountable or mass nouns. You often use much, some, a bit of, or a piece of with them, not a or many. Though actually, many of these words can switch: coffee is noncount when you mean the drink as stuff, but a coffee is fine when you mean one cup. The school list (water, rice, information, homework) is a useful start, not a law. The word itself is classroom language; outside class, people just say uncountable.
