A non-white person is someone who is not classed as white — and white here is a racial group, mainly in countries that have long sorted people that way, such as the US and the UK. You meet the word on forms, in the news, and in research: it is a box that means “everyone who is not in the white box.” It can be an adjective (non-white students) or, more , a noun (non-whites), which many people now dislike. Though actually, that leftover-box design is exactly why the word feels awkward. It treats white as the centre and then lumps Black, Asian, Indigenous, mixed, and many other peoples into one pile, as if they were one kind of person. Some official writing still uses it because the old categories are what the numbers were built on; many speakers now prefer to name the groups they actually mean. In Taiwan this Western race map is not how everyday talk sorts neighbours, so you will mostly meet non-white in English-language news and school texts about those countries.
