If you are non-committal, you carefully do not say what you really think, or what you plan to do. You give an answer that leaves the door open: “We’ll see,” “That’s interesting,” “I haven’t decided.” People do this to stay polite, to keep their choices, or to avoid a fight. Though actually, it can also annoy the other person, because they can tell you are holding something back. It is a slightly formal word, used about people and about what they say or do — a non-committal smile, a non-committal reply. It is not the same as having no opinion; it is choosing not to show it.
