A drink that is non-alcoholic has no alcohol in it — or so little that the law and the label do not treat it as an alcoholic drink. Juice, most tea, and ordinary soft drinks are non-alcoholic. People also say non-alcoholic beer or wine for drinks that have had almost all the alcohol taken out, so someone who is driving, pregnant, or avoiding alcohol for religion or health can still have the taste. Though actually, those “alcohol-free” beers often still hold a tiny bit of alcohol, just under the legal line, so they are closer to “almost none” than to “none at all.” The word is calm and everyday: you see it on bottles and menus. You can use it for other products with no alcohol, such as mouthwash, but drinks are by far the usual use.
