Noisome means very unpleasant — the kind that turns your stomach. People use it most about smell: a noisome smell is thick, dirty, and sick-making, not just “a bit .” It can also describe a place or a state of things that feels foul and nasty, not only the air. Though actually, you will almost never hear this word in ordinary talk. It belongs to books, older writing, and a slightly fancy voice. Younger speakers say disgusting, foul, or horrible instead. It looks a little like noise, but it has nothing to do with sound.

組成From Middle English noysom: noy (a short form of annoy) + -some (“having that quality”). The annoy side goes back through French to Latin inodiare, from in- (making it stronger) + odium (“hate”).
