A no-nonsense person, manner, or plan is practical and direct. They do the job. They do not waste time on small talk, pretty words, or extra steps. A no-nonsense teacher tells you what to do; a no-nonsense haircut is simple and tidy. The word is usually a compliment, or at least respectful: this person is clear and gets things done. It can also sound a little sharp — not warm, not patient with fuss. You use it as an adjective, almost always with a , before a noun. Though actually, nonsense here is foolish extra talk or fuss, not something that is . A no-nonsense person is not word-by-word a person who never talks nonsense; it means they are straight and practical.
