A no-holds-barred discussion, fight, or report is one with no rules holding people back. People say what they really think. They may go at each other hard. Nothing is set aside as too rude or too private. The picture comes from wrestling: a hold is a way of someone, and if a hold is barred, you may not use it. No holds barred meant every hold was allowed. Today it is almost always a picture, not a real match — news, debates, and sports writing love it. It can sound or a bit fierce, depending on who is talking. You will see it with before a noun: a no-holds-barred interview. Though actually, even the old wrestling phrase did not mean there were truly zero rules; it meant as free as the fight was allowed to get.
