From Old English hundniġontiġ; nine + -ty.
源自古英文 hundniġontiġ，就是 nine 加上 -ty。
You can picture ninety as the plain count 90; the other uses come from putting it in the plural, 'the nineties', which marks a band of ten — years 90-99, ages 90-99, or degrees 90-99 — with the context telling you which scale you are on.
可以想成，ninety 本身就只是 90 這個數目。有趣的是它變成複數 the nineties 之後：一整段從 90 到 99 的區間被打包成一個名字。至於這個區間量的是年份、年紀還是溫度，字面上看不出來，得靠前後文和前面接的小字（the / your / in the）來分辨。
