A nincompoop is a stupid person — but the kind of stupid you smile at, not the kind you shout. It is an old, slightly silly word. use it. Children's books use it. If you call a friend a nincompoop, you are teasing them, not starting a fight. You would not put it in a serious school essay, and you would not say it to a stranger who had really done harm. Though actually, even in a story, people often like the nincompoop a little. It sits closer to “silly fool” than to a hard insult, and it sounds comic on purpose.

The first bit, nincom-, may come from the name Nicholas or Nicodemus (French nicodème can mean a gullible person, after the Nicodemus in the Bible who asks Jesus very simple-sounding questions), or from ninny. The second bit, -poop, may come from an old verb poop, “to cheat or fool someone.” Samuel Johnson once guessed it was from Latin non compos (mentis), “not of sound mind,” but that is not the story scholars accept.
