    A nimby is someone who does not want a new thing built near their home — a road, a dump, wind turbines, a factory, sometimes even housing — and wants it put somewhere else. The letters stand for not in my back yard. Yard here means the garden or land behind a house. Newspapers use nimby to show : it paints the person as selfish. Though actually, the worry can be real — noise, traffic, the price of a house. The word is still not a kind one. It can name a person (He is a nimby) or an attitude (a nimby campaign). In Taiwan the same idea is 鄰避, as in 鄰避效應. A newer opposite is YIMBY, “yes in my back yard.”
