Nike is a big American company that makes sports shoes, sports clothes, and bags. You know it by the fat tick on the side of the shoe — they call that mark the — and by the line Just Do It. The name is not a made-up sound: it comes from Nike, the old Greek goddess of victory, of winning. The company wants that feeling to sit on the shoe. Say it NY-kee. In Taiwan people say 耐吉; in mainland China the same brand is usually 耐克. Same company, different Chinese. You will see Nike on trainers, football kits, and with athletes. This entry is the company, not a history-class note about the goddess — though actually it is the same old name.
