1. 1

This is a very ugly racist word. In British English, some people used it to insult a Black person. It is not a joke, and it is not “just old slang.” It puts a person down because of their skin, and in many places it can get you in serious trouble at school, at work, or with the law. Do not say it. Do not write it about anyone. Do not try it “to see how it sounds.” If you meet it in an old film, a nasty comment, or a book from years ago, you now know why it is there: to hurt. Close it and use a normal word like person — or, when you truly need to talk about race, the words that group has asked for. You may also see it spelled nig-nog.
