A nightstick is a short, thick stick that a police officer carries as a weapon, to keep order. It is mainly an American word; British English more often says baton, and an older British word is truncheon. Though actually the “night” in the name is a leftover from when officers walked the streets at night with it — they can carry one in the daytime too. It is heavier than a walking stick, and it is not a glowing stick. You will hear the word in US news and crime stories. In everyday Taiwan Chinese, the object people recognise is 警棍.
