A nightlight is a small, usually dim electric lamp that you leave on in a child’s room so the room is not completely dark. It is not for reading, and it is not a torch you carry around. It sits on a table or plugs into the wall and glows softly all night. Parents use it when a child is afraid of the dark, or so someone can walk to the bathroom without turning on a bright light. Grown-ups sometimes use one too. It is an everyday, informal word. You may also see it written as two words, night light.
