A nighthawk, in this sense, is a person who likes staying awake late, or all night, and feels fine when other people are asleep. It is an informal picture-word: you are a hawk of the night, still hunting while the world is dark. American English uses it this way; many people everywhere would rather say night owl for the same idea, and that is the phrase students will hear more. There is also a real bird called a nighthawk, but this entry is the person, not the animal. It is a friendly label, not an insult — though it can hint that you sleep through the morning.
