Nigerian is the ordinary word for a person from Nigeria, and also for things that belong to that country: Nigerian food, Nigerian music, a Nigerian passport. You can say “She is Nigerian” or “He is a Nigerian”; both are normal and polite. There is nothing rude about this word. Nigeria itself is the country — a large oil-producing state in West Africa, east of Benin and west of Cameroon, independent from Britain since 1960, with as capital and Lagos as the huge coastal city. Because so many ethnic groups live there, “Nigerian” names the country they share, not one single culture or religion. Use it for people and for anything tied to the place; do not use it as if it were the place-name.
