Nietzschean means about the German Nietzsche, or following his way of thinking. Friedrich Nietzsche lived from 1844 to 1900. His famous books include Thus Spake Zarathustra and The Antichrist. He wrote that God is dead — not as a joke, and not simply as there is no God, but as a claim that Europe could no longer rest on Christian rules the way it used to. He hoped a new kind of person might appear, the Übermensch, often translated as superman: someone brave enough to make their own values instead of copying the crowd. Though actually later groups used that superman idea in a twisted way, as if it meant a master race, which is not a fair reading of his work. In English, Nietzschean can describe an idea, a book, or a person. We capitalise it because it comes from a name.
