Nickelodeon is a television channel, especially in the United States, that makes programmes for children: cartoons and light funny shows about everyday life. Many learners already know its famous cartoons even if they do not know the channel's name. The name is older than the channel, though. A long time ago in America, a nickelodeon was a tiny cinema. A ticket cost a nickel — a five-cent coin — and odeon was an old word for a theatre. So the name first meant a cheap little picture house. The children's channel later borrowed that old, friendly name. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter.
