Niamey is the capital of Niger, a large country in West Africa. It sits in the south-west of the country, on the River Niger. It is the seat of government and the country’s biggest city. The river is the city’s life: water, trade, and a green strip in a very dry region. Though actually, English speakers mix up Niger and Nigeria all the time — they are neighbours and the names look alike, but Niamey is not in Nigeria (Nigeria’s capital is ). Older sources sometimes call the city Niave. In English the usual stress is on the middle: nee-AH-may.
