The NHL is the top professional ice hockey league in North America — the United States and Canada. The letters stand for National Hockey League. Though actually, “national” is a little tidy: the league covers two countries, and many of the best players come from elsewhere in the world. Teams are split into two groups, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. After the regular season, the strongest sides play a long knockout competition; the winners lift the Stanley Cup, a famous silver trophy. In the US and Canada, “hockey” almost always means ice hockey, not field hockey. People talk about the NHL the way they talk about the NBA for basketball: the league on television, with the biggest stars and the biggest money. It is a proper name, so we say the NHL.
