NH is the written short form of New Hampshire, a small state in the northeast of the United States, in New England. You put NH on letters, forms, maps, and number plates. When you speak, you say the full name New Hampshire, not “N-H,” except when you are reading an address code aloud. It is one of the older US states. The two-letter form is the official postal abbreviation, in the same family of codes as NY for New York or CA for California — but those are other places, not pieces of this word.
