A newsreel is a short film of real news that cinemas used to show before the main movie. This was how a lot of people saw moving pictures of the world — wars, sports, famous visitors — before television was in every house. The pictures often had a loud, voice talking over them. The reel is a spool of cinema film; we kept the word after those spools went away. Though actually, you will almost never see a newsreel in a cinema now. You meet the word in history, in old films, or when someone is talking about the years before TV. It is not a short video on a phone, even if people now say reel for that.
