A newsgroup is a place on the internet where people who care about the same thing leave messages for each other, like a . Though actually, the word belongs to an older part of the internet called Usenet, from before the web was everywhere; the “news” was the stream of messages, not newspaper news. It is not live chat, and it is not a newspaper’s staff sitting in a room. Younger people more often say forum, board, or group. You still meet newsgroup in older computer writing.
