A newsflash is a very short burst of news that breaks in suddenly, in the middle of another show, because something big has just happened — a storm, a crash, an election result. Radio and television use it; you may also see a short line of text. That is the serious meaning. Though actually, people also say “Newsflash:” in a joking way before they tell you something that is already obvious, as if it were breaking news. That joking use is informal and a little sharp. The first meaning belongs to broadcasting.
