1. 1

Newmarket is a town in Suffolk, in the southeast of England. People know it as a horse town: they breed there, train them, and run famous . If you hear the name in British English, it is usually this place, not a market that happens to be new — though the name is built from new + market, like a market that started later than an older one nearby. Other towns in the world are also called Newmarket; the one dictionaries mean is this English racing town. A kind of long coat (a Newmarket cloak) and an old card game were named after it.
