Nevis is a small island in the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the Leeward Islands, and together with the nearby island of Saint Kitts it makes the country Saint Kitts and Nevis. People go there for beaches, old sugar-plantation history, and a mountain in the middle called Nevis Peak. Though actually, the name comes from Spanish nieves, ‘snows’, from Nuestra Señora de las Nieves — ‘Our Lady of the Snows’. The island is hot and tropical; the ‘snow’ lives in the old Spanish name, not on the ground. In English you say NEE-vis. Students sometimes mix it with Nevada because both names hide a Spanish word for snow — they are different places, an ocean apart.
