Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun — the last of the eight we still call planets, now that has been moved into a smaller group. It is a huge, cold world of ice and gas, not rock you could stand on. It looks deep blue because a gas around it swallows the red light and leaves the blue. Sunlight there is weak, and one year on Neptune (one trip around the Sun) takes about 165 of our years. The name is not a lab word. It is the name of the old Roman god of the sea, chosen when this far blue world was found in 1846. That is why Chinese calls it 海王星, “sea-king star.” Though actually the Romans never knew the planet; they only knew the god. Same name, two things: the god with his three-pointed spear in stories, and the planet in science class. People sometimes joke that a place is “as far as Neptune” when they mean far, but that is play, not a set phrase you must learn.
組成From Middle English Neptune, borrowed from Latin Neptūnus, the Roman god of the sea. That name may come from an old word meaning “damp” or “cloudy” — wet, like the sea (the same old root shows up in Greek and Sanskrit words for cloud). Some scholars instead tie it to an old word for “child” or “descendant,” the family of nephew. Both ideas are guesses; nobody in Rome left a note saying why the god was called that.
